Why ASC for farms?

The ASC certification standards are a wonderful tool to ensure that our decisions and best practices have a positive impact.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is the world’s leading certification scheme for farmed seafood – known as aquaculture – and the ASC label only appears on food from farms that have been independently assessed and certified as being environmentally and socially responsible.

What’s involved in getting certified?

Five stages take a farm from first enquiry to a certificate it maintains over time. Each one is assessed independently.

  • Enquire – find the right standard and appoint an independent auditor
  • Assess – check current practices against the standard and close any gaps
  • Audit – independent on-site assessment, with a public comment period
  • Certified – the auditor issues the certificate if the standard is met

Improver programme

Not every farm is ready for certification yet. The Improver Programme supports those committed to getting there, giving them a clear, time-bound plan to raise their practices through an Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP).

  • AIP to certification – a four-phase plan that brings a farm up to the level needed to begin ASC certification
  • AIP to better practices – focused environmental or social improvements, for farms not seeking certification
